Understand why holiday dates reshape train supply, hotel demand, opening hours, and crowd levels—and how to build a route that can absorb them.

Official holiday arrangements are announced by year. Never reuse last year's calendar.

The short answer

Check the official holiday arrangement for the exact travel year before booking. Long public-holiday periods can sharply change train availability, hotel prices, road traffic, and attraction crowds, while adjusted work weekends can surprise visitors. Protect the route with early reservations and at least one low-logistics fallback day.

Crowds are not evenly distributed

Rail hubs and headline attractions feel the strongest pressure. Neighborhood walks and secondary museums can remain useful if the day is planned deliberately.

Build a release valve

A flexible day protects the whole itinerary when tickets sell out or a transfer becomes exhausting. Keep one low-logistics option in every major city.

Common failure points

Copying dates from a previous year because the holiday name is the same.
Scheduling a tight intercity transfer on the first or last day of a long holiday.
